The University Magnet Program at Heritage High School offers an enriched, highly-structured and rigorous education to prepare tudents for admission to colleges, universities and the work force. The hallmarks of the magnet program are diligent study, firm discipline and extensive parental involvement.

Program Areas

The University magnet program is most appropriate for students seeking a high level of academic achievement in a structured environment in these fields of studies:

  • Arts and Humanities
  • Behavioral and Social Sciences
  • Business and Marketing,
  • Mathematics
  • Natural Sciences
  • Visual and Performing Arts

What is distinctive about this program?

  • Students are enrolled in two Honors and/ or one Advanced Placement course per year

  • Students participate in College and Career Prep, PSAT/SAT and Senior Seminar courses

  • Students create virtual portfolios that display their goals, achievements and future endeavors

  • Students have access to onsite college and career specialists as well as Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) Career Coaches

  • Students are provided opportunities and partnerships with businesses, higher education communities and professional organizations

  • Students engage in community service, job shadowing and internship opportunities

  • Students experience and engage in leadership workshops and youth development opportunities

  • Students participate in Leadership Academies

  • Students participate in college and university tours

Who is eligible?

Entering students must make a commitment to pursue a challenging and highly structured course of study. The program serves grades 9 through 12 and all rising ninth graders are welcome to apply. Other students should contact the magnet program adminsitrator. If there are more applicants than spaces, students will be selected by computer lottery. Current University magnet students and their siblings have priority.

How do I apply?

All students who wish to attend the University Magnet at Heritage must submit an application by the January deadline. Applications are available at any Newport News school, the Administration Building and on the Newport News Public Schools magnet website.

Transportation is provided to all magnet programs.
